From high above, my drone captured this breathtaking moment on the morning of Beltane. As the very first golden rays of summer light spilled across the Somerset Levels, they kissed the ancient tower and bathed the hill in a soft, radiant glow. Below, a beautiful tapestry of souls had gathered on the sacred slopes, sitting, standing, embracing, and celebrating together in the hush of pre-dawn.
This is more than just a gathering. It is a living prayer. A collective heartbeat synchronising with the Earth herself. In that liminal space between darkness and light, the veil feels thinner, the old ways feel closer. For thousands of years, this Tor has drawn people seeking connection, to the land, to the seasons, to something greater than ourselves. On Beltane, that ancient current flows especially strong: the festival of fire, fertility, and renewal. The moment when winter finally yields to summer’s promise.
Even though I wasn’t standing among them on the grass, witnessing this scene unfold through the drone’s eye moved me deeply. To see so many people drawn to this one hill, choosing to greet the sunrise in community and reverence, is profoundly humbling. It reminds us that the old traditions are not relics of the past, they are alive, breathing, evolving, and dancing on this sacred land once again.
The image carries a quiet magic: the warm tones of the tower against the endless green fields and the shared energy of everyone present. It is a snapshot of hope, of continuity, and of the enduring human need to honour the turning of the wheel.
Though Beltane has now passed and we find ourselves further into the bright months of the year, the fire kindled that morning still burns. May it ignite something within you too, a deeper connection to the land, to your own inner light, and to the quiet magic that still moves through this world.
May the flame within you burn bright, steady, and true, all year long.
